Escaping Condo Jail is a must-have book – and whether you want to “escape from” or “enter into” condominium living. It is based on decades of professional real estate and journalism experience, enough to have absorbed first-hand “conversion” mania from rental apartments to condominium in the 1970s and back again to “de-conversion” in 2019. Originally published in 2014, the book is up to date with forms and other topical information available online.Anyone old enough to remember Ralph Nader will appreciate the consumer-activist orientation, meticulous research, references, and footnotes that are part of this book. At the same time, and despite 650 pages, it is readable and engaging for any audience. You can find answers quickly to just the questions that interest you, and then come back later for a broader view. And above all: prospective owners need to have on their side a real estate broker who represents them exclusively, not a “dual-agent” juggling the interests (and ethics) of both buyer and seller at the same time.“Millennials” and other young people, less consumed with home ownership than their “baby-boomer” parents, will find this book helpful and critically informative.
